Once you know how to handle a car, and you are confident you can safely deal with the Level 4 activities you may want to start going out with members of the family or friends supervising you. This is a good way of getting much needed practice, and is recommended for learners.

Both you and your supervisor must be happy with your skill levels BEFORE you venture out onto busy roads - show them your skills on quiet roads first.

Remember, the vehicle you are driving will not have dual controls, so your supervisor will not be able to take control if things start to go wrong. If you are prone to make basic mistakes wait a while before asking a family member or friend to go out with you - it is better to be safe than sorry!

Legally the supervisor must be aged 21 or over (25 in some cases), and must have held a full driving licence for the type of vehicle for at least three years. The supervisor must also obey the same rules as if he were personally driving - for example mobile phones must not be used, and the supervisor must not be over the drink-drive limit or under the influence of drugs.

You must also have valid insurance for you to drive the vehicle. There are several companies who provide insurance for learners at reasonable cost. If the worst happens and you are involved in an accident it does not affect the vehicle's main insurance (for example the no-claims discount is not affected).

You must display L-plates all the time you are driving, and these must be removed before a qualified driver uses the vehicle.

Level Four:

In Level Four we will start to handle traffic situations:

You will drive on more complex road systems with heavier traffic
You will encounter a variety of road junctions
You will work out where the car needs to be on the road in order to interact safely with other traffic
You will meet other traffic safely
You will safely cross the path of other vehicles
You will deal with a variety of obstructions in the road
At this stage you will learn observation, anticipation, assessment, decision-making and action to a high level

At this level you are starting to think like a driver, whereas in Levels 1, 2 and 3 you were getting used to controlling the car.
